How To Prepare For Your Wisdom Teeth Removal

All your friends are doing it, and now it’s your turn. As you get ready for your wisdom teeth removal, remember that these procedures are common. In fact, we do them every day in our Warren NJ office. You’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about. If you read this guide that we’ve prepared for you and follow it closely, you’ll be well prepared, and your recovery will be smooth and maybe even fun!

WHAT CAN I EAT AFTER MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL?

First of all, remember to not eat or drink anything the morning of your procedure or for eight hours beforehand. The only exceptions are pre-approved medications that may be taken with a sip of water.

The day before surgery, help your parents stock up on smooth, pureed, soft foods, such as ice cream, apple sauce, soup, Jell-O, yogurt, mashed potatoes, milkshakes, smoothies, and oatmeal. After surgery, start with clear liquids and progress to soft foods slowly.

Don’t drink with straws or smoke tobacco throughout the healing period. Using straws and smoking can dislodge the clot that is covering your extraction site, resulting in a very painful condition called “dry socket”.

CAN I DRIVE MYSELF TO MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL?

Actually, no. If you arrive unaccompanied to surgery or plan to drive home by yourself, we will not be able to proceed with the procedure. Have your companion plan to stay for the duration of the wisdom teeth removal which is usually about an hour. Also, arrange for a responsible adult to remain with you throughout the day.

HOW SHOULD I PLAN TO SPEND THE REST OF THE DAY?

This is an excellent question because the way you spend your day will significantly impact your recovery. We encourage you to rest the entire day. Do not plan to exercise, go to school, work, or even get caught up on homework or housework. Take advantage of the excuse to kick back and relax. Stream some movies and find a cozy spot on the couch to rest. Feel free to sleep the day away.

HOW CAN I MANAGE THE PAIN?

The good news is you will feel no pain during surgery. We offer a variety of levels of anesthesia to accommodate personal preferences. We are trained and highly experienced with administering anesthesia and will provide you with a safe and comfortable experience. You won’t feel a thing.

We have a great regimen for pain medications administered in our office and post-operative medications that we will prescribe for you to be picked up at your pharmacy.   Our office exhausts all efforts in limiting the usage of narcotics as we now know the combination of Motrin and Tylenol has extremely high efficacy in pain control.  We will supply you with an ice pack specifically made for wisdom tooth removal that straps around your head without the need to hold the ice in place.  You will be given additional reusable ice inserts so you can utilize ice for 2 days using a regimen of 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off.

WHEN WILL I FEEL NORMAL AGAIN?

You should be fully recovered within three or four days. If it is a more complicated surgery, involving impaction, recovery may take longer. Your wounds may take up to a month to heal, so make sure to follow the aftercare instructions we provide for you to avoid an infection. Most importantly, refrain from smoking, spitting, drinking from a straw, and strenuous exercise. These activities can dislodge the blood clot or your stitches.

Being prepared for your wisdom teeth removal comes down to taking a few simple steps ahead of time, so there’s no need to expend any energy as you recover. Your recovery experience depends on your prep. Prior to surgery, we will supply you with very specific pre-and post-surgical instructions so that you know exactly what to expect.   Our website, warrenoralsurgery.com, is an excellent resource to review this information and watch a post-operative instruction video that reviews all of this information.  Have no fear; you are in expert hands with Drs. Sullivan, and Aramphongphan and their entire staff at Warren Oral Surgery.  Please feel free to call Warren Oral Surgery for a wisdom tooth consultation as we greatly look forward to seeing you.
